After the beheading of 13 soldiers by Taliban militants in Miranshah, Pakistan Army has decided to launch a targeted offensive in North Waziristan. The United States has repeatedly demanded that Pakistan launch an offensive in North Waziristan, especially against the so-called Haqqani network. Pakistan has promised to address the US concerns on Haqqani network, but has shown reluctance to launch a full-fledged operation in the restive tribal agency.
After the latest killing of Pakistani soldiers by the Taliban, military sources told Online that the army had decided to launch a targeted operation in the North Waziristan Agency (NWA) in the next few days. They said the NWA offensive would be completely different from the operation carried out in Swat.
Sources said that Army Chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani had consulted President Asif Ali Zardari in this regard and took him into confidence. Sources confirmed that there were currently three brigades of Pakistan Army fighting against militants in NWA. Sources said the operation could be launched any time during the next few days, and very likely ahead of the NATO heads meeting in Chicago, which is to be attended by Zardari. After the military offensive in South Waziristan, nearly 3,000 militants went into hiding in the NWA. Sources said that as the weather was becoming warmer, the militants were coming down from the mountains and attacking army soldiers.
