The mushroom of tuition and coaching centres, witnessed in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, has led a question mark on the performance of educational institutions both in private and public sector.
These tuition centers and academies are found in almost every street and corner of both cites claiming to use special teaching methods, qualified teachers from reputed educational institutions and these centers guarantee the passing of students in first division, and some of them offer money back guarantee in case of unwanted results. Different colorful banners, hoardings and posters can be seen in almost all localities of the twin cities in this regard, small posters to huge banners and signboards have been displayed by the tuition centers to woo students. Apart from that these centers also use newspapers to market their services, and another recent way of marketing the tuition services is the SMS services to mobile subscribers, promoting their services and packages. A number of students, their parents and people from different walks of life expressed mixed response to the prevailing trend of these coaching centers; some termed it a minting-money-business, while others termed it a blessed facility for their children to improve performance. Students and parents think it necessary to get the children admitted in a renowned academy for good grades and performance in studies. They also argued that such institutions provide extra help and practice through test sessions that help students in preparing for their exams. Rehan Naqvi, a student of grade 10, however told, “These academies and tuition centers provide good study material, like mock test papers that a student cannot easily get hold of in schools or colleges and all these factors help a student prepare better for a competitive examination. He said that the most crucial advantage of taking up coaching is that one gets to know the paper pattern, questions asked in the previous exams as well as their solutions, which chapter or question should be given more importance, etc. Ahsaan Ahmad, father of a student said, “I am personally against such courses as this is merely a loss of time and money and secondly nothing practical is taught to the students in these coaching centers”. The same teachers and lecturers teaching in their institutions are destroying the future of youth with notes culture. Most of the students join these private institutions just to get their syllabus done with the cheap notes which their so called “teachers” provide them, He further said it was the moral duty of teacher to perform their duties efficiently and think beyond the material benefits.
