Former chief of army staff (COAS) General (r) Mirza Aslam Beg on Wednesday said in the Supreme Court that he was not involved in the alleged disbursement of millions of rupees among anti-Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) politicians to manipulate the 1990 general elections.
Submitting his reply in compliance with the court’s order of April 25 in Asghar Khan case, the former army chief said he had already elaborately submitted in his concise statement that the amount was not placed in the army’s account, rather it was placed in the account of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the relevant person having the knowledge of the accounts would be Lt General (r) Asad Durrani being the director general at that time or any other person, who he (Asad Durrani) might have directed.
“In fact the accounts were maintained by the ISI and I only instructed ISI DG Lt Gen Asad Durrani to maintain accounts,” Beg said in his reply.
He said no misappropriation was ever reported or came to his knowledge, adding that the ISI was not under his command.
The former army chief contended that he had absolutely no involvement in the disbursement of donations ordered by former president Ghulam Ishaq Khan and that he merely possessed knowledge being the commander of armed forces.

  1. It is a sad day in the history of Pakistani politics where two ex chiefs of armed forces are involved in money in exchange for votes( allegedly} Air Marshal Asghar is in the winter of his life. If there is a ?honest politician in Pakistan it is he. Let us hope he lives to see justice done.

  2. Astonshing, we are more interested in people who given away the money, not the ones who actually behaved as beggers and morally corrupt politicians. Bring all of them to justice.

    • Bring all of them to justice…Good but who will do it?
May me people will have to set up there own courts-

  3. Asghar Khan is a decent and an honest politician. His books are a true reflection of his struggle. The last I read "We Have Learnt Nothing from History" is a very rewarding read.
I pray for him; for his health, happiness and long life.

In a country like Pakistan where parliamentary form of government is in place people like Asghar Khan should hold the office of the President of Pakistan.

  4. the culprit should be punished to end this robbery's,its enough , CJP do not let them go its time to punish them for their deed;s

  5. The stand taken by Aslam Beg is not tenable. Whatever the chain of command, DG ISI always obeys the orders of Army Chief. If ISI was under Prime Minister, is Aslam Beg suggesting that Asad Durrani was disbursing money to politicians under orders from Benazir Bhutto so that her government could be toppled? Only a General can give such a foolish explanation!!!
But, alas, Chaudhry Court is incapable of doing justice. Justice is the last priority of Chaudhry Court. Otherwise, he would not be sitting as Chief Justice after taking oath under PCO twice in 1999 and 2000 under Musharraf. Once a PCO judge, always a PCO judge.

  6. Aslam Beg is a liar. He took Rs. 14 Crore from Habib Bank and passed some of it on to ISI for distribution. He should be charged with theft. At the time, Habib Bank was Government owned, so he stole from the public and is as guilty as Zardari in Swiss case.

Supreme Court should have his expenses audited since the money was stolen from HBL as some it may have ended up in his pockets.

  7. it is a known medical fact that when one is around 80 years of age one's mental faculties have declined considerably. Our old COAS is fighting for his honour and diginity but how reliable is his testimony. Without trying to be patrionising may i ask if he has taken a mini mental system test. In some countries it would be requested. The stakes are too high in this case. He is on unfamiliar ground!

  8. A country of liars and masters of denials. beating their chest about religion all the time look how these are lying like small childerns.

  9. It appears this court will first build up some public frenzy and then adjourn for weeks. It will again take up at a time that suits his lordship who is proving to be equally 'competent' in politics rather than the public demands of the case.Like the PM the credibility of CJ has a question mark.
