National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza on Monday stressed for stringent public awareness campaign to make the country free from Thalassemia.
She said that today,millions of children across the world were suffering from Thalassemia,which needed immediate attention of the nations individually and collectively. She expressed these views in her message on the Thalassemia Day being observed on Tuesday across the world. The Speaker said that like other Asian countries Thalassemia is amongst major health concerns in Pakistan. She said lack of awareness among the masses was the main cause behind the increase in Thalassemia disorder in the country. She stressed the need for creating public awareness for prevention of the dreadful blood disorder. Thalassemia was a genetically transmitted blood disorder,which had affected millions of people around the world and its further proliferation could only be slashed down by avoiding intra-family marriages, she added.
Fehmida Mirza called upon the provincial governments to allocate necessary funds for establishment of Thalassemia Centers to ensure health coverage and blood transfusion services to the deserving patients in both the rural and urban areas of the country. She appealed to the non-governmental organizations and philanthropist community to generously donate for establishment of such centers where deserving Thalassemia patients could undergo clinical care besides having free blood transfusion services. Fehmida Mirza also called upon the media to create awareness among masses to stop further proliferation of the blood disorder. She eulogized the services of the volunteers and philanthropists working for well being of Thalassemia patients.
PM lauds Aslam Gill on holding successful Lahore rally: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Monday congratulated his Special Assistant, Aslam Gill for holding a successful rally in Lahore on May 5.
The Prime Minister appreciated the efforts of Gill for the rally which was attended by a large number of Pakistan Peoples Party workers who vowed to continue to strive till the realization of mission of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.
