At least four people were killed and several others injured in Karachi on Monday as the situation in Lyari worsened and people of the troubled town started migrating to other parts of the city to save their lives.
Two people were shot dead in Lyari. However, police claimed that law enforcement agencies gunned down five miscreants in exchange of gunfire in the area. Meanwhile, gunbattles between the law enforcement agencies and miscreants were going on in Afshani Gali, Cheel Chowk and Gul Muhammad Lane until the filing of this report. Workers of humanitarian organisations supplied food to the residents of Lyari who were running short of ration due to operation in the area and closure of shops. The residents staged a protest demonstration at the Jinnah Flyover.
Police had to resort to aerial firing and teargassed protesters to disperse them. The protesters attacked the police, broke through all barriers and reached the Tower but were again intercepted. Addressing a press conference at Central Police Office (CPO), Sindh IG Mushtaq Shah said police operation will continue in Lyari until elimination of criminal elements.
