Lawyers Action Committee (LAC) held a protest demonstration at GPO Chowk, The Mall Road on Monday demanding removal of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in wake of his conviction by Supreme Court in the contempt case against him.
The protestors demanded of the speaker of the National Assembly to send a reference for disqualification to the Election Commission for de-notification of the convicted prime minister. They threatened that lawyers would devise a comprehensive action plan for endless protests if the PM remained glued to the office.
The protest demo was led by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz lawyer Khawaja Mehmood under the banner of LAC. Most of the lawyers in the protest belonged to the PML-N.
Meanwhile, Judicial Activism Panel welcomed the decision of PML-N to initiate agitation for non-implementing the decision of august SC of April 26 including proposal of “Long March”. For this purpose a meeting was called on Saturday to chalk out a details and comprehensive plan to support every movement for protection of independence of judiciary and efforts to implement decision of SC.
The meeting was led by JAP Chair Azhar Siddique and Supreme Court Bar Association Vice President Imrana Bloch.
Separately, the Lahore High Court Chief Justice Azmat Saeed will resume proceedings on May 2 in a constitutional petition seeking court orders to restrain the PM from performing his duties as PM of the country and surrender all perks and the privileges that he is enjoying despite conviction by the SC in the contempt of court case.
The petition has been filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Inqalab through its counsel AK Dogar. The petition contends that after conviction by the SC, the PM had ceased be the PM of the country and he should resign or resign be taken from him by the speaker of the national assembly as per provision of the constitution.
The petitioner prayed to the court pass direction to the NA speaker to stop the PM from working and withdrawn all privileges from him. The petitioner beseeched that the PM as MNA be de-notified through proceedings on the reference that should be sent to the election commission immediately. The LHC office has fixed the case for hearing before the LHC CJ for May 2.
