Federal Ministers Qamar Zaman Kaira and Farooq H Naik have said that the statement by Nawaz Sharif was an attack on the Supreme Court and an attempt to influence it before the issuance of a detailed judgment in the contempt case against the prime minister.
Addressing a joint press conference, Naik said it was also an attempt on the part of Nawaz Sharif to divert the court’s attention from the Mehran Bank Scandal.
The minister expressed the hope that the court would not come under any influence.
He said the supreme court in its verdict of April 26 did not disqualify the prime minister nor his membership of the National Assembly.
He said powers rested with the NA speaker, chairman of the Senate and chief election commissioner to disqualify a member of the parliament.
Naik said Nawaz, his colleagues and the SC registrar were in a hurry to send Yousaf Raza Gilani home, but he could not be sent to Multan without completing the legal processes.
The law minister said a privilege motion would be moved in the National Assembly against the registrar for his writing of letter to the speaker and the election commission.
Kaira said after the apex court verdict in the contempt case, certain opposition leaders and some TV anchors were continuously talking against the reality. He said the PPP was not the party that attacked the Supreme Court, rather it accorded due respect to the judiciary. Kaira said nineteen years ago, Nawaz attacked the Supreme Court and he had once again launched an attack on it.
He said all political leaders, including Imran Khan, had spoken of devising their course of action after detailed judgment, but “Nawaz and Chaudhry Nisar have a divergent view point”.
