Six people were shot dead, while five, including 2 policemen, were injured in Lyari as the government began a grand clearance operation in Karachi’s troubled area on Friday.
The operation began in early hours of Friday and heavy contingents of police and Frontier Constabulary began looking for criminals hiding in the locality.
A man was shot dead in Gabol Park while five people, including police personnel, were injured in the operation, according to a private TV channel.
CID SSP Chaudhary Aslam Khan was also present during the operation and a squad of women police also took part in the operation for the very first time.
Law enforcement personnel faced resistance upon their arrival and blockades were placed at all entry and exit points of the area.
A police armored personnel carrier (APC) came under a grenade attack in Nawa Lane area of Lyari. No loss of life was reported in the attack.
Loud explosions and firing were heard in Sango Lane, Cheel Chowk and Aath Chowk, causing panic and fear among the residents.
In light of the ongoing unrest, board examinations of class nine, which were re-scheduled for today, were postponed again.
The operation follows incidents on Wednesday when a policeman was gunned down during an exchange of fire with a suspected gangster and the killing of a political activist.
