Federal Law Minister Farooq H Naik has said that appeal against the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s judgment in contempt case could not be filed until a detailed judgment is issued.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday at the Press Information Department (PID) flanked by Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira, the law minister said that the apex court had not handed a copy of its ruling to the prime minister on Thursday.
“In all similar cases, the court always gives a detailed order, so the accused can read it and file an appeal against it. But the Supreme Court did not give the detailed order in this case, nor did it give the order’s copy to the prime minister.”
He said that Yousuf Raza Gilani was still the prime minister and member of the National Assembly while the cabinet was also functional. Naik criticised the apex court for its judgment and raised various technical objections over the SC orders.
The law minister also criticised the Supreme Court Registrar Nasir Iqbal for writing letter to National Assembly speaker asking for compliance of court orders.
Naik said that the registrar had no right to dictate any parliamentarian as he did not enjoy such powers.
Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira has said that the prime minister has always respected the courts and will continue to do so as per the party’s tradition.
He said Pakistan Peoples’ Party has always contested its cases in the courts and never tried to break the chain of Justice. Kaira also regretted that Pakistan Muslim League (N) was twisting facts on the court orders.
