The International Council of Jurists (ICJP) has conferred the prestigious International Jurists Award, 2012 on Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, in recognition of his contributions to the administration of justice. A spokesman for the association said on Saturday that the award ceremony is scheduled to be held in London on May 28th in which the award will be presented by Chief Justice of United Kingdom Rt Hon Lord Phillips in the presence of chief justices, law ministers, members of the parliament, bar leaders, law teachers and journalists from different countries who have been invited for the prestigious occasion.
The award is a regular feature of the International Council of Jurists and some of its earlier recipients include International Court of Justice President Justice Rosalyn Higgins; Chief Justice of United Kingdom Rt. Lord Phillips, Chief Justice of Canada Justice Beverley McLachlin; International Court of Justice Vice President Justice Awn S Al-Khasawneh. The Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry had put up resistance against former military dictator, Gen Pervaiz Musharraf and became the inspiring icon for the historical movement of the restoration of the judiciary. He was deposed by the military dictator in March, 2007 when he refused to relinquish the post. Pakistan witnessed a historical lawyers’ movement after Musharraf sacked the chief justice.He was restored on July 20th, 2007 and was again sacked along with other judges of the superior judiciary on November 3rd, 2009 when Musharraf imposed emergency in the country. Iftikhar Chaudhry and other judges were reinstated by the democratic government in March, 2009. Iftikhar Chaudhry was also awarded The Medal of Freedom, by the Harvard Law School Association in 2007.
