Top officials of the Islamabad police have managed the release of a liquor-dealer who also escaped arrest on the charges of smuggling liquor when the customs authorities moved to arrest him for already having been declared as a proclaimed offended in 2007.
According to details, the Bhara Kahu police had arrested Raja Zaheer and recovered 14 bottles of imported liquor from his custody. On investigation, Raja Zaheer told police that he had bought liquor from Malik Aamir. The police arrested Malik Aamir but the high officials immediately came into action and personally ensured his release.
In the process, Station House Officer (SHO) of Bhara Kahu police station Khalid Masood Akram was also transferred to Rescue 15. The SHO, however, belied the claims of his seniors that Malik Aamir was falsely implicated in the case saying he had acted on the statement of Raja Zaheer who was caught red-handed while carrying 14 bottles of imported liquor.
Interestingly, Raja Zaheer changed his statement during investigation. However, when the police presented him before the court for extension in his remand, he told the judge that he was coerced to change his first statement. On hearing Raja Zaheer, the court granted him bail. The nexus between Superintendent Police Captain Ilyas and Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Malik Yousuf Hadmd forced Raja Zaheer to get desired statement. Raja Zaheer had first told police that Malik brothers had provided him liquor to deliver at Bhurban. He had also revealed address of the store where smuggled liquor was dumped by them.
After investigating Raja Zaheer, the Bara Kahu SHO conducted a raid at the said place and arrested Malik Aamir and his brother Malik Abid. However, both the top police officials personally reached the spot and influenced the investigation and legal procedure. Consequently, Malik brothers were released while Raja Zaheer was forced to record desired statement which was different from the first one.
On Tuesday, Raja Zaheer was produced before the court of Judicial Magistrate Sheikh Sohail where he informed the court that he was forced to change his statement due to inhuman torture of the police on the orders of Captain Ilyas and Malik Yousuf. On this, the court ordered to remove some sections of the FIR and granted bail to the accused.
