As five more people were killed in the city on Monday, President Asif Ali Zardari formed a core committee of coalition partners in Sindh to control the increasing incidents of targeted killings.
A man gunned down his wife and her alleged boyfriend in Ayub Goth, said the Sohrab Goth police.
They said Mumtaz Khan barged into a house in Shah Haroon Society and opened fire on his wife Lal Jan and her alleged beau Sadd Badshan.
Jan and Badshan suffered bullet wounds and died on the spot, whereas Khan escaped from the crime scene, they added.
Police said, “Khan, Jan and Badshan hailed from Kohat. Jan had eloped with Badshan to Karachi a few days ago.”
However, they added, Khan found out about their whereabouts and came to Karachi from Kohat to kill them. Separately, a man killed his mother-in-law over a domestic issue, said the Quaidabad police. They said Jamshed went to his in-laws’ house in Gulshan-e-Buner to reconcile with his wife who had left her husband’s house after an argument. However, they added, in the heat of the moment, Jamshed sprayed with bullets his mother-in-law Noor Begum (55), brother-in-law Hafeez (20) and wife Afsana.
Police said the wounded were immediately shifted to a hospital where Begum succumbed to her injures, whereas Jamshed managed to escape.
In another incident, a man was gunned down in Usmanabad, said the Garden police. They said Zulfiqar Umer Hayat (35) was having breakfast at Asghar Hotel where he was targeted.
Police said Hayat suffered bullet wounds and died on the spot, whereas his elder brother Ashiq believes he was murdered over personal enmity.
According to Ashiq’s statement to the police, his family is in the middle of a serious dispute in Multan, where two of his brothers are in police custody over murder charges.
In Orangi Town, a man was gunned down near the Sindh Government Qatar Hospital in Sector 7-C. Police said the victim was identified as Naseem Jan (40). They said Jan’s body was recovered in the wee hours.
Separately, a man was killed near the 4-K bus stop in New Karachi. The victim was identified as Awais Hameed (30).

The committee was formed during a meeting at the Bilawal House with the coalition partners in the provincial government.
The committee comprises two members each from the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), the Awami National Party (ANP) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).
The MQM delegation was led by Rabita Committee Deputy Convenor Dr Farooq Sattar, Senator Shahi Syed led the ANP delegation, whereas the PPP was represented by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah.
Zardari urged the coalition partners to play their due role in restoration of peace in the metropolitan. He was also briefed about the situation in Lyari, the stronghold of the PPP. He ordered addressing Lyari’s issues on a war footing.
MALIK: Interior Minister Rehman Malik called on Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan at the Governor’s House.
Malik and Khan discussed the prevailing law and order situation in the metropolitan. They also discussed various options to curb targeted and sectarian killings.
Khan apprised Malik that all political parties are in agreement regarding action against target killers and extortionists.
Malik assured Khan that the law-enforcement agencies would be provided with enough resources to tackle criminals.
Earlier, Malik told the media at the Jinnah International Airport that members of the PPP, MQM, ANP and many other political and religious parties are collecting extortion money in Orangi Town.
In response to a question regarding the ephedrine scandal, he said nothing has so far been proven against Moosa Gilani.
Talking about the plane crash, Malik said licences to private airlines were issued during the government of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.
Responding to the allegation of receiving a bribe for restoring Bhoja Air’s licence, he asked for proof and assured immediate action in this regard.
“In my personal opinion, old planes should not be included in the airline fleet. Besides, inquiry is under way to ascertain why old planes of only Cathay Pacific come here,” said the minister.
He appealed to Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan to refrain from playing politics on the bodies of the crash victims.
“By expressing his reservation on the judicial commission, [Nisar] has tried to hide his own guilt,” said Malik.
He said it is unfair of Khan to say that the Airblue incident’s report has not been made public, adding that he wants Airblue founder Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to be arrested.
