PBM to set up blood bank for thalassemia patients

In order to express solidarity with Thalassemia patients, Pakistan Baitul Maal (PBM) Managing Director Zumurd Khan appointed 13-year-old Thalassemia patient, Mohsin Khan, on Monday to act as the PBM MD for one day.
While holding the temporary charge of the PBM, the teenager met with different applicants and passed various orders while acting as the MD at the PBM headquarters.
Zumurd Khan assured that the orders passed by the teen will be implemented in letter and spirit.
While talking to journalists, Zamurd Khan expressed gratitude to Mohsin Khan for taking his charge for the day.
“I want to work for the needy and will leave no stone unturned to help those in need,” he said and added that appointing a Thalassemia patient the MD was a gesture to express his solidarity with all such patients.
Zamurd Khan also announced Mohsin’s appointment as the PBM ambassador for Thalassemia carrier patients and said the PBM will establish its blood bank according to the orders passed by Mohsin, to help the patients suffering from Thalassemia and hemophilia.
“We will give gold medals to those who have donated blood more than 100 times while those who donate blood 50 times will be awarded silver medals,” he added.
He said the PBM will also launch an awareness campaign about Thalassemia to give the general public basic information about preventative measures that can be taken against Thalassemia and hemophilia. Mohsin Khan, who is a 9th grade student and is on blood transfusions for the past 13 years, told journalists that he wanted to follow in Zamurd Khan’s footsteps.
“I want to work for Thalassemia patients. I also wish to establish a blood bank under PBM. I would request the government to launch awareness campaigns on Thalassemia, similar to the ones that are run about Polio eradication,” he said.
On the occasion, Dr Naila from the PIMS submitted an application with Mohsin Khan asking the PBM to provide funding for 50 Thalassemia patients admitted in the Children’s Hospital, PIMS.
Khan approved the application.
Mohsin Khan was diagnosed with Thalassemia six months after his birth.
Since then, the teenager is on blood transfusions. He likes Biryani and plays cricket.
