Exorbitant chicken prices hit consumers

The prices of vegetables remained stable while the prices of fruits and chicken increased at the Sunday bazaars of the city.
Out of 29 listed vegetables with market committee, the prices of 11 vegetables including tomatoes, brinjal and ladyfinger decreased. The prices of eight vegetables including ginger, garlic, lemon, spinach and peas increased as compare to last week while the prices of 10 vegetables like potatoes, onion and green chillies showed no change.
In fruits the prices of apples, bananas and guava increased while the prices of strawberry decreased. Once again the prices of chicken showed an increase of Rs 15 per kg as compare to last week’s price of Rs 245 per kg. The sales of chicken also decreased due to high prices and the consumers remained more interested in buying mutton and beef.
The CDGL remained inactive throughout the day, as despite many complaints against the vendors, the CDGL official did not fine any. The consumers said that the vendors remained busy in selling sub-standard products and they complained the management of Sunday bazaars but no significant action was taken. A handout issued by CDGL also states that no fine or penalty was imposed on vendors.
