Time to go 3G!

Telecom specialists and distinguished speakers at the 5th Pakistan TeleCON 2012 conference presented progressive ideas for deployment of next-generation technologies in the telecom sector of Pakistan to enable swift economic growth, reach un-served areas of the country and encourage a new knowledge-based young Pakistani generation to tackle national issues and challenge the global frontiers.
The theme of the conference held in Karachi was “Riding the wave of technology and consolidation”.
PTA Chairman Dr Muhammad Yaseen delivered the keynote address and urged the specialists to devise solutions for streamlining and enriching the telecom infrastructure with global advancements.
Former science and technology minister Javed Jabbar and Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) Chairman Nadeem Elahi along with PTA Member Technical Khawar Siddique Khokhar acted as the chairpersons during various sessions.
In his opening remarks, SHAMROCK Communications President Menin Rodrigues welcomed the delegates from leading telecom companies and stressed the need for continued dialogue at knowledge-based forums to pursue communications, economic and social goals.
Various sessions at the day-long conference were focused on topics like “Regulatory – Technology and Economic Challenges”, “Maximising the Power of 3G Technology” and “ICT – Improving Access, Growth, Utilisation and Energy”.
The conference’s highlight was a high-level panel discussion on the topic of “Technology-aided communication and its social impact”, where experts and stakeholders discussed broad-based transformations in the cellular and IT arena, along with the expected challenges and solutions.
After an absorbing input from celebrated stalwarts like Jabbar, School of Leadership CEO Shireen Naqvi and Dubai Islamic Bank Corporate and Investment Banking Country Head Masood Karim, the panel came to the conclusion that though technology was the forerunner in the quest for advancements in business and communications, it was not necessary that human values be changed.
Over the years, TeleCon has become a successful annual forum which attracts participation from all industry professionals, stakeholders and social sectors specialists.
Other prominent speakers at the event included Universal Service Fund CEO Riaz Asher Siddiqui, Multinet Pakistan Managed Services Head Rehan Farooqui, PTCL SEVP Furqan Qureshi, Saquib Ahmad of Comptel Pakistan and Afghanistan, Schneider Electric VP Munib Khawaja and Supernet Limited COO Hamid Nawaz.
