Former law minister Babar Awan on Tuesday said he was ready to testify in the contempt case against Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani but was stopped from doing so.
Talking to reporters upon his return to Pakistan after completing a 10-day-long tour to India on invitation from various Indian bar associations, Awan said he believed in politics of principles and did not conduct his politics on the basis of personal likes and dislikes, adding that he was not displeased with anyone in the PPP. The former law minister said he was and will always be a diehard supporter of the PPP. To a question regarding the removal of the inauguration plaque bearing his name outside the Islamabad High Court (IHC) bar room, Awan said, “Name plates do not have any real significance.” To a question regarding the presidential reference filed in the Supreme Court to reopen the Zulfikar Ali Bhutto case, the PPP senator said the case’s reopening was a milestone in Pakistan’s judicial history. To a question over not meeting President Asif Ali Zardari in India, Awan said he could have met the president but did not try. The former minister avoided to answer questions regarding the contempt of court case against him.
