The ban on motorcycle pillion riding in the city was challenged in the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday.
The Sindh government’s Home Department has imposed a ban on pillion riding on motorcycles due to the deteriorating law and order situation.
Human rights activist Rana Faizul Hasan filed the constitutional petition in person before the SHC, praying the court to declare the order as illegal and unconstitutional, as it is against the articles of constitution 4, 5 and 25.
Citing the Sindh Home Department as a respondent, the petitioner submitted that people are facing hardship due to the ban on pillion riding.
Terming the order “financial murder of approximately 2 million citizens belonging to the poor and middle class”, he prayed that the court declare pillion riding ban as unlawful and direct the government to lift the restriction immediately. The petitioner had submitted that pillion riding was banned in the past owing to the rise in street crimes, burglaries and terrorism across the city, but no improvement has been witnessed.
