In its next session, the Sindh Assembly would bring forth a resolution for upgrading the Sindh Medical College (SMC) to a full-fledged university, said Sindh Assembly Deputy Speaker Shehla Raza during a ceremony arranged by the SMC Alumni Association Pakistan.
The programme organised to mark the 39th anniversary of the college was also attended by SMC graduate Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Dr Farooq Sattar, Sindh Health Secretary S Hashim Raza Zaidi, Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Sindh President Dr Samrina Hashmi, and faculty members, graduates and undergraduates of the SMC.
The deputy speaker of the provincial assembly assured that the SMC would definitely be granted the status it deserves.
She said, “This college was established by Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who understood well the needs of the people and had the will to get them materialised.”
Not only a resolution for upgrading the SMC would be brought forth in the very next session of the assembly, but it would hopefully also be unanimously adopted, she added.
The deputy speaker assured that the legal and constitutional procedures required for granting the SMC the status of university through presentation and adoption of a bill would be initiated without any delay.
“The fact that the SMC has emerged to be one of the best medical colleges of the country over the years and that it has produced over 10,000 graduates cannot be overlooked,” she added.
The federal minister Dr Sattar, a strong supporter for the SMC being granted the status of university, urged the students and graduates to make concrete efforts for the achievement of the much cherished goal.
PMA Sindh President Dr Hashmi expressed full support on the PMA’s behalf towards the cause of the Sindh Medical University.
The ceremony was also attended among others by Dr Nusrat Anis, Dr Sameer Qureishi, Prof Tariq Rafi and Dr Qaisar Sajjad.
On the occasion, a debate and poster competition was also arranged, which was largely participated by the students of the college.
