Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Friday that the approval of the parliamentary resolution on NATO supplies and the foreign policy is welcome; however, there is a need for its complete implementation.
He stated this while addressing the 46th joint convocation of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan and the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Bangladesh.
College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan President Zafarullah Chaudhry highlighted the performance of the institution, saying that it is providing modern educational facilities to doctors in various disciplines of medicine.
422 fellows were awarded degrees and 53 fellows were given memberships in the convocation. Prof Rakhshanda and Dr Abrar Ashraf Ali were given honours while gold medals were given to the position-holders.
Chief Minister’s Advisor on Health Khawaja Salman Rafique, delegates from Pakistan, Bangladesh and India associated with the medical sector, medical superintendents, vice-chancellors, professors and a large number of doctors were present on the occasion.
The chief minister, in his address, praised the doctors, paramedical staff and nurses for bravely countering last year’s Dengue outbreak, saying that it was the worst in human history, but that countless lives were saves due to their tireless efforts.
He praised the healthcare systems of Cuba and Iran, but said despite having the best talent and human resource attention had not been paid to the development of Pakistan’s health sector in the last 64 years. He added that medical experts should evolve comprehensive recommendations for the uplift of healthcare system.
Sharif appreciated the role that the College of Physicians and Surgeons has played in the promotion of quality medical education and ensured the college of the Punjab government’s cooperation.
The CM said the power crisis, had caused irreparable damage to the national economy, besides negative impacting the performance of hospitals and educational institutions. He added that practical measures needed to be taken to cope with the problem.
Later, speaking to the media at a local hotel, the chief minister also said that democracy is aimed at public service but the rulers have pushed the nation into despondency in the name of democracy.
He stated that Pakistan needed trade, technology and modern knowledge and skills instead of foreign aid.
He said that Pakistan is rich in mineral resources and can achieve a dignified status internationally by developing the sector, but that national resources must be spent on the welfare of the people. He said Pakistan and India should resolve all bilateral issues and utilise their resources for the betterment of the masses. Citing the example of China and Taiwan, he said war is not the solution to any problem and that both the countries needed to solve their issues through negotiations to make progress on the health, education and economic fronts.
Expressing his views on the approval of a unanimous resolution in the joint session of the parliament, the chief minister said the resolution should be implemented in letter and spirit.
He said pressure will be put on the government if the resolution was flouted like it was in the past and that bilateral relations with America and other developed countries should be established in such a manner that national interests are upheld.
In reply to a question about the strike of doctors, he said there is no justification for holding a strike on the basis of departmental postings and transfers.
