CJ asks Punjab govt to provide security to woman declared ‘vani’

Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has directed the authorities concerned to provide security to Tahira, a resident of Bhakkar declared “vani” by her family members. A three-member bench of CJ Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Khilji Arif Hussain and Justice Tariq Pervez on Friday heard the case regarding the antiquated traditions to convict women. During the hearing, details of cases regarding convicting women in Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Islamabad were presented in the court. The CJ directed the Punjab government to constitute a committee to probe into issue of Tahira, who had been declared vani by her family, and present a report on the next hearing.
