400 tonnes of stolen railway scrap recovered

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Friday recovered 400 tonnes of iron scrap stolen from the Pakistan Railways. The scrap was recovered from four people after the police acted on information provided by Zahid Butt, who was arrested earlier for his involvement in the theft.
The Railway Police recovered 230 tonnes of iron scrap during a raid on a warehouse owned by Zahid Butt.
The accused then disclosed the location of another warehouse where 400 tonnes of the metal had been stashed.
The police then arrested four more people, who were said to be relatives of a well-known political personality.
The NAB has already arrested Railways General Manager Saeed Akhtar for embezzling the funds obtained following a sale of railway scrap.
PAS to hold Ali Gohar Mystic Show: The Pakistan Association of Sufism (PAS) will hold the Ali Gohar Mystic Show on Saturday 14 April at the Al-Hamra Hall.
The show is a part of a series of events planned by the PAS to promote Sufism.
The show will introduce the public relations expert, poet and seasoned writer, Liaqat Ali Gohar as a Sufi performer. He will sing his own Sufi poetry on the occasion, followed by an exclusive chapter from ‘Kalaam-e- Hazrat Sultan Bahu’ as well as the ‘Arefana Kalam’ of Hazrat Baba Bulleh Shah and Madho Lal Hussain Shah. A group of likeminded professionals have formed the Pakistan Association of Sufism to interpret and apply Islam in the way the Sufis of the subcontinent did.
The association believes that the Sufi approach towards religion can help curb extremism, corruption and anxiety in the society.
The participants of Ali Gohar Show will also pay homage to the later Sufi singer Iabal Bahu.
LHC moved against young doctors’ strike : A petition, seeking action against the young doctors for observing a strike, was filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday. The petitioner submitted that the young doctors wanted to create a state within a state and were defying the court’s orders. The petition added that the strike had left the patients in a state of perpetual mental stress.
The petitioner requested the court to issue orders for the initiation of action against the young doctors for violating its orders.
PR denies increase in passenger fare: The Pakistan Railways has denied news regarding a 25 percent increase in passenger fares applicable from April 2012.
According to a press release issued on Friday, passenger fares were increased on March 15th and freight and parcel rates were increased on January 21st of this year.
Railway authorities explained in the press release that despite the increase in fuel prices from April 5th, the passenger, parcel or freight rates will not be increased to absorb the rise in financial expenditure.
It said that the department was trying to improve its existing facilities to attract more customers and to reduce its deficits.
PU students shine in All Pakistan Jinnah Bilingual Declamation Contest: Punjab University students have won the team trophy in All Pakistan Jinnah Bilingual Declamation Contest 2012, organized by Government College University, Faisalabad.
Hamza Tarrar, a student from Institute of Business Administration got 1st position in Urdu Debate while Misha Batool from Institute of Communication Studies got 3rd position in English Debate contests.
PU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran, has congratulated students to earn fame for the varsity and hoped that their performance would continue in future. The other participating teams were GC University Lahore, University of Sargodha, King Edward Medical University Lahore, Punjab College of Commerce Lahore, Gomal University DI Khan, Punjab Medical College Faisalabad, National Textile University Faisalabad, NFC College of Engineering Faisalabad, University of Lahore, University of Agriculture Faisalabad and Government College Faisalabad.
Meanwhile PU VC will participate in a ceremony “An Evening with Zahid Malik”, which will be held on Saturday April 14 at 03:00 pm at Alhamra Hall No 3. Mohsin-e-Pakistan, Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, will preside over the function which will be addressed by, SM Zafar, Prof Sajid Mir, Dr Shafique Jalandhri, Dr Mujahid Mansoori, Atta-Ul-Haq Qasmi and others will also speak on the occasion.
