Former Senate chairman and senior PPP leader, Farooq Naik was appointed federal minister for law, justice and parliamentary affairs on Wednesday. Naik was sworn in by President Asif Ali Zardari during a ceremony held at the Presidency. Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani was also present.
Naik replaced Maula Bukhsh Chandio, who resigned from his post during a Senate session earlier this year when reports emerged that his predecessor, Babar Awan could be reappointed as the law minister. Chandio later denied tendering his resignation but Leader of the House Nayyer Hussain Bokhari confirmed it. Awan, who was considered the right-hand man of the PPP co-chairman and the president, has now been sidelined by the leadership due to his refusal to appear before the Supreme Court as a witness in a contempt of court case against Gilani.
