The participants of a workshop discussed modalities to effectively deal with natural calamities and disasters and to especially help the vulnerable people to secure their rights.
The workshop titled ‘Humanitarian Diplomacy and Communication’ was jointly organised by the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS)-Sindh and the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC).
Senior journalists and representatives of the PRCS-Sindh, the IFRC, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the German Red Cross, the Swiss Red Cross, the Norwegian Red Cross and the Danish Red Cross participated in the event.
PRCS-Sindh Chairperson Farzana Naek, praising the work of the IFRC and the PRCS-Sindh, hoped that such programmes would help understand the challenges emerging from natural calamities and how to effectively deal with such disasters.
PRCS-Sindh Secretary Kanwar Waseem told the participants about the role of the IFRC in the public welfare and in dealing with natural calamities throughout the world.
He suggested that Pakistan should come up with a law ensuring immediate rescue and relief to the victims of a natural calamity. They must be provided the required medical care, quality food in sufficient quantity and reasonable shelter. The people affected by floods, rains and earthquakes should not feel isolated and unsafe, he said, adding that the PRCS-Sindh is doing its level best in this regard.
The representative of the IFRC, acknowledging the role of the media during calamities in the country, said that the media helps create awareness among the people and gives them moral boost to stand firm and come out boldly from such situations.
