The Indian East Punjab government has forwarded a proposal to the External Affairs Ministry to remove obstacles in importing buffaloes from Pakistan, according to a news report in the Times of India. The government has proposed to import buffaloes from the cities of Kasur and Lahore which are 50 kilometres away from the state of Indian Punjab. Chandigarh, the heart of Indian Punjab, is famous for its culinary delights and consumption of dairy items. The average daily consumption of milk in the state of Indian Punjab is estimated to be 6.75 lakh litres per day. According to a news report, Indian buffaloes produce four to eight litres of milk a day whereas Pakistani buffaloes, which are also known as Nili-Ravi and Kundli, can produce 36 litres of milk per day. The decreasing population of buffaloes and lower production of milk in the state has been considered a problem for the past five years which is why the government resorts to artificial means of increasing milk yield.
