The central character behind the rental power projects (RPP) scandal and former Private Power Infrastructure Board (PPIB) MD Fayyaz Elahi, who has dual nationality, has fled to Canada, before the Supreme Court issued directives of putting his name on the ECL and all others involved in the RPPs scam, while one accused Basharat Cheema had been appointed as in-charge of the Anti-Load Shedding and Monitoring Cell (ALSMC) in the Water and Power Ministry.
According to sources, Fayyaz had been appointed as PPIB MD on recommendations of former caretaker water and power minister Tariq Hameed before the 2008 general elections. Former water and power minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf had been supportive in giving an extension of services and sent two separate summaries to Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani in this regard, but the PM rejected them after the RPPs scandal was taken up by the Supreme Court.
Sources said that during Nawaz Sharif’s govt, NAB chairman Saifur Rehman had ordered the arrest of Fayyaz on corruption charges but he fled to Canada. According to sources, NAB was likely to seek Fayyaz’s extradition from Canada through Interpol.
