Fuel prices might go down, but just a little

After feeling the heat of increasing public resentment against the recent hike in fuel prices, the federal government has decided to bring them down by a small fraction, sources said on Monday.
According to sources, upon the directive of President Asif Ali Zardari, the concerned authorities were mulling to bring the rates down and a notification in this respect would be issued shortly. The sources disclosed that a reduction of about Rs2 per litre was expected in the price of petrol, while a decrease in diesel prices by Rs 3 was also likely.
Meanwhile, the All Pakistan CNG Association (APCNGA) announced to go on strike for indefinite period, saying that it would not accept the meagre reduction in the prices.
Addressing a news conference, APCNGA Chairman Ghayas Paracha condemned the government for the “unjust and illegitimate” increase in fuel prices.
On the other hand, commuters, transporters, traders and politicians rejected the government’s expected decision of meagre reduction in petrol prices.
The All Pakistan Transport Owners Association (APTOA) has already warned that fares would be raised if petroleum prices were not brought down.
Traders set an ultimatum of 72 hours for the government to reverse its decision and warned of holding a countrywide campaign of civil disobedience in case the prices were not brought down.
