Hearing a petition seeking direction to the federal government not to strike a deal with India for purchase of 5, 000MWs electricity, the Supreme Court (SC) on Monday directed the counsel for the petitioner to furnish the Indian SC’s judgment on rivers interlinking 2005. A three-member bench consisting of Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and Justice Athar Saeed, adjourned the hearing due to shortage of time until April 5.
The Watan Party on Saturday filed a petition through Barrister Zafarullah Khan, saying that Pakistan had accepted India’s offer to get 5,000MWs electricity. He said it was a shameful act that Pakistan was going to purchase electricity which India produced from illegally-constructed dams on Pakistan’s rivers and their stolen water. Zafraullah said due to theft of water, Pakistan was facing scarcity of water for the Kharif crop. He said it was highly unfortunate that by buying Indian electricity, Pakistan would approve their theft and also accept violations of the Indus Water Treaty 1960.
