Polish media piled on the praise on Monday for Agnieszka Radwanska’s maiden Miami title, where she dismantled Maria Sharapova and staked her claim on a Grand Slam this season. The Pole’s 7-5, 6-4 defeat of the world number two, which denied Sharapova her first victory in four finals appearances, was a “triumph of finesse in an era of force”, wrote Przeglad Sportowy. Radwanska had won earlier this year in Dubai but Saturday’s victory over Sharapova marked a new high as she competed in the prestigious Miami tournament boasting a personal record ranking of fourth in the world. She became just the second multiple title winner on the WTA Tour this season, behind world number one Victoria Azarenka, as she clinched the Miami crown without dropping a set in six matches. “Here in Poland we’ve known for ages that Agnieszka has massive talent,” her trainer Tomasz Wiktorowski was quoted as saying by the daily Metro. “What was missing was this kind of win,” he added. Metro headlined simply “Agnieszka Radwanska Superstar”, hailing Polish tennis’s greatest success to date and tipping her to become world number one.
