As per the recent commitment made by Istanbul’s Mayor Dr Kadir Topbas for gifting buses to the Punjab government for its Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, around 300 refurbished buses have arrived at the Karachi port.
In a historic development, the mayor of Istanbul had recently announced a gift of 100 buses from the Turkish people to the people of Pakistan, as his country had done a great deal of work for Pakistan’s development, and the Pakistani people would have to show the same spirit for the development of their country.
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had also thanked and welcomed the visiting mayor at a luncheon hosted in Raiwind ahead of the opening of the civil work of the BRT project. He had also driven a bus on Ferozepur Road for inaugurating the project.
Well-placed sourced told Pakistan Today that the buses are to be shifted to Lahore for plying on the routes defined but the contractor at the port has asked the authorities concerned in Sindh to provide the gas required to shift the vehicles to their destination.
It is worth mentioning that the BRT is a 30-kilometre-long road project stretching from Shahdara to Kahna. TEPA and NESPAK are the implementing agencies of the mega project while the LTC will operate the buses on specific lanes.
