Ahad Tower, the name you cannot trust

Ahad Tower still stand at Kalma Chowk shamelessly reflecting the broken dreams of investors, who had risked millions only to see the skeleton that was once supposed to be source of income for them.
The plaza is stuck in the limbo and was never completed since its foundations were laid on an illegal construction plan. In the last six years, many of the investors have become heart patients, tension freaks and are mentally disturbed over what has become of their investment.
Muhammad Iqbal Butt was also among 861 investors, who had invested their money back in 2005 when administration/ owners of Ahad Towers (Ahad Family) had launched a vigorous and alluring campaign regarding sale of shops/offices in the said plaza and had highlighted its ideal façade through advertisement campaign only a few months after the start of plaza’s construction.
Muhammad Iqbal, a resident of Kashmir Block Iqbal Town, after returning to his homeland from abroad, purchased a shop and an office in the plaza and paid about Rs 4.5 millions to the administration of the plaza. Muhammad Iqbal told Pakistan Today that he had invested his life-time earnings in the plaza in order to settle his only son and to marry off his three daughters. He said the administration of Ahad Towers had promised its buyers that the shops would be handed over to them
by 2006 but the construction
was delayed.
He said that in 2009, he and other investors like him were waiting, when suddenly at the end of 2009, Supreme Court ordered that all illegally constructed plazas in Lahore be destroyed. Punjab government while acting upon the orders of Supreme Court launched massive operation in this regard and demolished several illegally constructed plazas including Ahad Tower.
He said the action taken by Punjab Government put final nail in the coffins of their investment. “The owners of Ahad Towers have never returned their money back, neither assured them for handing over their shops or offices,” said Iqbal adding that it looked as if the government carried out operation to help administration of Ahad Tower escape with the money of investors.
He claimed that Ahad family had pocketed Rs 1.420 billion of the total 861 investors but had not given anything in return. He said only seven influential people including Punjab Deputy Prosecutor Rana Bakhtiyar, retired DSP Anti Corruption Fayyaz Lodhi, Brigadier Abubakar, Humaira Amir, Dr Anwarul Haq, Colonel Sikandar and Advocate Supreme Court Muhammad Arif Chaudhary managed to get their money back.
He said that 17 victims had registered a case against the family in Garden Town Police Station. “Now the matter is in the court and we are still waiting for our money but the fact is that in order to get our own money back, we are spending more and more money to fight a case against the influential Ahad family in court”, said Muhammad Iqbal, adding that the Lahore High Court last week cancelled bails of former MPA Ahad Ahmed Malik, his wife Riffat Ahad Malik and son Muhammad Yousaf Ahad Malik, owners of Ahad Tower. “Only Yousaf Ahad Malik was present in the court room at the time of court’s decision, he came out of the court calmly and fled the LHC premises in the circle of his strong-muscled men. Though police and LHC security officials were present there but they did not arrest him. The affected raised hue and cry and tried to grab him but could not,” he said.
The owners have faced the police and court cases bravely and it looks as if they were quite satisfied over the demolition of plaza on Supreme Court orders by the Punjab government which in fact proved a blessing in disguise for them as they pocketed millions of rupees which they were suppose to spend on the completion of the plaza. Both the Supreme Court and Punjab government have taken no step to assure that the investors get their money back.
Expiates and retired officials, who put their money in the hell of Ahad Plaza are running from pillar to post for any helping hand
which may force Ahad family to return the money.
