Despite claims by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), flaws are still present in preliminary electoral rolls displayed in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa.
As many as 22 thousands dead voters names are present in these lists, like one Abdul Karim, resident of Peshawar who was passed away but his name was included in the lists.
Likewise, eight more dead voters of same constituency are given right to cast their vote, which speaks the volume of accuracy of the electoral rolls.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) displayed preliminary electoral rolls at around 5000 centers across the province.
The ECP did not confirm these mistakes but assured that it would amend the electoral rolls on finding errors.
The main question here is whether these deaths were ever reported to NADRA or not. It is the obligation of the next of kins of the deceased to report the deaths to NADRA for cancellation of their CNICs, failing which NADRA would never know about it and the persons would continue to remain on their lists. Our electronic media is over-zealous and rarely has time to be rational and resonable in their reporting.
The main purpose of electoral rolls verification was to check and cross check the preliminary lists provided by NADRA. This process also included verfication of the dead voters. ECP has simply failed to do it even after 6 months. I think media is in fact, trying to highlight this issue.
I agree, however, that next of kiln should inform NADRA for cancellation of cards in case of any death. But then again, who is fullfilling their obligations? Executive? Judiciary? Anyone? No one!
