Lawyers to take a shot at resolving Kashmir issue

A delegation of 209 lawyers led by Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan (SCBAP) President Yasin Azad left for India on Wednesday through Wagha border to interact with lawyers in Chandigarh and Delhi.
It has been alleged that most of the members in the delegation are PPP lawyers who supported Yasin Azad in the SCBA elections such as Muneer A Malik, Tariq Mahmood, Ali Ahmed Kurd, and Asma Jahangir former President SCBAP and a well known human rights activist. Vice President SCBA Imrana perveen Baloch has not been included in the delegation because she was elected to the bar seat with support of Pro-Judiciary Professional Group of Hamid Khan and often counters Azad and other PPP lawyers when they back the government posture against the judiciary.
Talking to reporters before crossing Wagha border, Yasin Azad said during the six-day visit he along with other senior members of the delegation will try to convince the Indian lawyers that they should build pressure on their (India’s) government to find some solution to Kashmir issue which has been lingering between the countries for decades, creating tension between two neighbors. He said without finding solution to Kashmir issue, the two countries can not improve relations or live in peace like other nations of the world. In the first leg of their journey the lawyers delegation will move to Chandigarh for attending a seminar at the Chandigarh Bar Association and afterward they visit to other Indian bars including Amritsar, Agra and New Delhi aiming at participating in seminars on the issues related to the law and justice in the region. On March 23 they will attend a conference of lawyers from India and Pakistan that will be inaugurated by Justice Altamas Kabir at Habitat Centre, Delhi.
LHC orders SHO’s arrest for
non-serious attitude: The Lahore High Court issued summons on Wednesday for the Lahore Capital City Police Officer and Deputy Inspector General (Operations) for March 27 on a petition against a Factory Area Police Station House Officer.
Justice Syed Muhammad Kazim Raza Shamsi passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Mehwish, who had alleged that SHO Atiq Dogar had entered her house illegally and tortured her and her family members.
Earlier, SHO Dogar had appeared before the court on being summoned but displayed a non-serious attitude during the proceedings.
The court took serious note of the situation and ordered the LHC security staff to arrest him. The SHO was released a few hours later on the court’s orders and directed to appear again on the next date of the hearing. The judge commented that Dogar’s behaviour was considered as mocking.
