Barrister Aitzaz Ahsen, who is advocating Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in the contempt of court case, claimed on Tuesday that the Supreme Court could not punish his client for more than six months.
Talking to reporters after the hearing of the case, he said the SC, in its orders on January 10, 2012, considered disqualification for life and a five-year imprisonment for his client. However, he said that he personally did not accept it. He said he believed that the court would review its consideration to this effect.
Aitzaz gave the example of Indian minister A Raja, who is currently serving jail after having been convicted of corruption, saying his corruption was in the notice of a close staff member of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He said when the matter was agitated before the Indian Supreme Court, it held that the prime minister had so many engagements that even if his closest officer knew about the corruption, it could not be proved in the court that the prime minister also knew about it.
He said that four documents had been submitted to the court in the contempt case as evidences which imply that the prime minister did not have any knowledge of the court orders.
He said he had requested the court to pass a verdict based only on the submitted documents. He said these were complete documents, and the court could hang his client over it if it wished to do so. He said that after the introduction of Article 10-A through the 18th Amendment, the law had witnessed important and basic changes and now fair trial had become a fundamental right of every citizen. He said he had raised objections about the bench on concrete basis and the court would have to consider his objections.

  1. If gillani did not know about such an important court order then do we really want such an ignorant person running our country? It would scare me to death that my prime minister is so wraped up in corruption that he does not even know what the court is ordering him to do. aitzaz is also a weasel and he is blinded by his desire to become someone important and he will step over his own mother to get there. Shame on all of them.

  2. Aitzaz Chaudhry must read comments by Kamran and feel the heat of rejection by the public.

  3. We all so deparately want our country to get on the right track and succeed that we losing patience with people who are in a leadership role but who keep letting us down. Our expectations of aitzaz were much higher than what he is delivering. He has flip flopped on his position and it seems like it not a big deal to him to go back on his word. That is not setting a good example for the future leaders (kids) 0f Pakistan. It appears that he has changed his position about writing a letter in return for a senate seat. Thats selling out!!!!

    • Can anyone give a guarantee that by writing a letter to Swiss authorities all the problems of our country will be solved. Come on and grow up now. Our media and so called civil society has been giving us this lolly pop for last some years every time wrapped in different cover. first it was LFO of PERVAIZ MUSHRRAF than it was his uniform, than it was his presidency than it was restoration of juduciary, than it was NRO, than MEMO SCANDAL and now it is letter issue. every time they come up with an issue by saying Oh, if we will do this all the problems will be resolved and every time after an issue is solved country goes more deeper in its woes. And believe me after letter problem is finished we will create a new problem to mourn. Our leaders, civil society must have the courage to speak truth and we should have the courage to listen and admit it. If we are so desperately seeking to punish Zardari and Co. wait for another year and after that go hang them in the public no one will stop you. but for the time being he enjoys the indemnity which is given by Parliament and every one knows how we fought against a "DICTATOR CALLED PERVAIZ MUSHARRAF" for this bloody democracy. We asked for it and now we must have to pay for it.
