Former US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro confirmed on Tuesday he will compete in this year’s Wimbledon warm-up event at Queen’s Club.
The Argentinian, who beat Roger Federer to win the title at Flushing Meadows in 2009, will join defending champion Andy Murray and last year’s runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the grass-court tournament which runs from June 11-17.
Del Potro, 23, has played at Queen’s twice before, reaching the third round last year, while his best performance at Wimbledon also came in 2011 when he lost a close match against Rafael Nadal in the last 16.
“I like the surface. I’m not a grass-court specialist but I’m improving,” he said.
The AEGON Championships at Queen’s is an amazing tournament, very nice to come to, to play, to train and I will be there for sure trying to win my first title on grass.
“I think that if I play my best tennis I have a chance to win a grand slam on grass but it will be very difficult.”
Del Potro, ranked 11th, has been returning to form after spending last season finding his way again following a serious wrist injury.
