Busy as bees

Punjab University Department of Zoology organized 8th National Beekeeping Training Workshop which was attended by both private and public sector including the department of Agriculture, Forest, Livestock, Education, Military Farms and Vocational Training Organizations etc.
The aim of the workshop was to create employment and improve livelihoods through knowledge partnerships. The training workshop would provide an excellent orientation for beekeeping as a hobby and profitable enterprise for honey production for the landless, those with small – holding and poor farming communities as well as help in the diversification of farm production through cross-pollination resulting in enhanced crop productivity. It is worth mentioning that in developed countries, honeybee colonies are rented by crop growers for pollination purposes.
Honeybee farmers in our country are facing serous difficulty in temporary placement of honeybee colonies near crops, orchards or forests. Major objective of participation of the multidisciplinary personnel was to help sensitize them about beekeeping and its benefits so as to develop awareness among then to solve problems of the beekeepers during migration of honeybee colonies to different floral belts in various localities.
