Government College University’s Oval Ground and its students on Monday wore traditional Punjabi festive look on the Punjab Spring Festival that was organised by GCU Punjabi Majlis and Philosophy Department to celebrate the colors of spring and promote social and cultural integration among students. GCU Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Dean Prof Dr Khalid Pervaiz inaugurated the two-day festival which was marked by traditional food and beverages stalls, live music performances, cultural dance performances and horse dance with ‘dhol’. However, the traditional dance performances by groups of Balochi and Phathan students remained the most enthralling events of the day. The venue was decorated in traditional village style with Hukka, Charkha and pitchers. The students also arranged a special Bhagi (traditional horse cart) to drop visitors to the festival venue. The student delegation of various departments attired traditionally visited the festival.
Speaking on the occasion, Pervaiz said the western culture was being adopted by the youth because they were not being provided opportunities to understand and adopt their culture. He laid a stress on promoting and keeping Pakistan’s core values and strong cultural heritage alive. He said these events gave students a chance to enjoy after spending a busy semester, studying. The chief organizer, Yasir Sultan, said the festival was devoted to culturally educate youth and motivate them to preserve and promote Pakistan’s culture. He said they would continue to organise such cultural festivals to promote love, tolerance and harmony.
