A man killed his 35-year-old wife and her 24-year-old cousin in the name of honour in the Gujjarpura police precincts on Monday.
The woman was identified as Shahida Bibi, a resident of the Mehmoodabad area, while her cousin was identified as Atta Ullah, a resident of Deer District.
According to details, Shahida was a Lady Health Visitor (LHV) and operated a private clinic in her house. She got married to Noor Ahmed 15 years ago. Ahmed later got married for a second time, without Shahida’s permission.
He was living with his second wife in the China Scheme area of Gujjarpura. On the day of the incident, Shahida was at home with her first cousin, Atta Ullah, who had come to the city late Sunday night to search for a job and was staying at Shahida’s house with her four children and younger sister, when Ahmed arrived there. Shahida and Ahmed exchanged harsh words, after which Ahmed pulled out a gun and fired a shot Shahida. When Atta Ullah tried to help Shahida, Ahmed opened fire on him as well before fleeing from the scene.
The locals, alerted by Shahida’s children and her sister about the incident, rushed the victims to a nearby hospital where the doctors pronounced them dead.
Gujjarpura Police Station House Officer Inspector Shahid said the police had registered a case under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of Shahida’s father, Badshah Umer. He stated the incident was under investigation and that the suspect would soon be arrested.
“During the preliminary interrogation, it was established that Ahmed murdered his wife and her cousin on suspicion that they had illicit relations with each other,” said Inspector Shahid.
Shahida’s sister told Pakistan Today that Shahida had filed an application in the court requesting a separation from Ahmed. She stated that Ahmed was forcing her sister to accept his second marriage and that he wanted to shift his second wife in the same house as Shahida. She added that on Monday, the two quarrelled about the same issue. Shahida’s brother, Rehmat Ali, alleged that Ahmed wanted to occupy Shahida’s house which she had purchased from her father a couple of years ago.
He said Ahmed used to torture his sister, after which her neighbours restricted him from coming to the area. He claimed that the accused had also wanted to kill the victim’s younger sister, but was unable to do so as he had already emptied his gun on Shahida and Atta Ullah.
