While hearing a case of 11 prisoners at Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, who were picked up by spy agencies after their release and four of them died during detention, the Supreme Court on Friday directed the secret agencies to keep the remaining seven prisoners at a detention centre near Peshawar, and provide them the best health facilities. A two-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and Justice Tariq Parvez was hearing a petition filed by late Ms Rohaifa against the federation of Pakistan and others.
Tariq Asad, counsel for the petitioner, Attorney General (AG) Maulvi Anwarul Haq, Asadullah Chamkani and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) advocate general appeared on court’s notice. Commander M Hussain represented the Ministry of Defence, while Raja Muhammad Irshad appeared on behalf of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Military Intelligence (MI). At the onset of the hearing, the KP AG submitted the provincial government’s report before the bench, according to which three detainees Abdul Majid, Abdul Basit and Dr Niaz would be kept for further medical treatment at the hospital, whereas other four detainees, including Mazharul Haq, Muhammad Shafeeq, Shafeequr Rehman and Gul Roz, were in considerably better health and were recommended to be shifted to a detention facility.
