‘Moot on climate change to enhance cooperation’

The international meeting of parliamentarians on climate change was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, with a call for concerted efforts towards formulating global responses to the effects of climate change.
According to a press release issued on Friday from IPO, the three-day convention titled ‘International Meeting of Parliamentarians on Climate Change: Durban and Beyond’ was opened by the Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina. Over 30 participants from Asia and Pacific, Africa, America and Europe attended the meeting.
The Intellectual Property Organisation Pakistan Chairman and former federal minister for environment Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi represented Pakistan in the meeting and termed as vital the need to institute concrete mechanisms for transfer of green technology to developing countries for mitigation against climate change. He said the challenges occasioned by global warming and other climate change effect as real and an existential threat to humanity.
Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi said that climate change was a global issue which was of concern for the entire international community. The earth climate warming is an “unequivocal” fact which is causing widespread melting of snow and ice, along with a concomitant rise in an average sea level among other impacts. Scientific studies revealed that the vulnerability in a changing climate is already severe in many countries and will increase day by day. A collective responsibility to combat this global warming and climate change is necessary and in line with sustainable development for our better future.
He said that meeting was held to promote regional and international cooperation between parliamentarians of the most vulnerable countries. It provided a forum for parliamentarians to discuss and debate challenges in light of the results of CoP-17 in Durban and to formulate strategies for parliamentary action to tackle common problems.
The IPO chairman highlighted the activities carried out in Pakistan to address the environmental issues and pointed out a number of measures to be adapted to tackle the issues causing environmental degradation.
