The Pakistani judicial commission, comprising investigators and lawyers, will leave for Mumbai today (Wednesday) to collect evidence for the prosecution of seven suspects arrested in the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Sources said the commission of eight members from the prosecution and defence and an official, will travel to India to record statements of the witnesses of the Mumbai incident and cross-examine them.
It will also record the statements of investigators and doctors who conducted autopsies and the magistrate who recorded the confessional statement of Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving gunman in the incident. The visit is the first of its kind, and comes after Pakistan indicted seven alleged conspirators in 2009 but has since said it needs to gather more evidence in India before proceeding further. New Delhi says Pakistan’s attempts at prosecution have been a “facade” and insists it has already handed over enough evidence to convict the accused.
