All set for anti-polio campaign in Taliban’s birthplace

All is set for an anti-polio campaign in the birthplace of the Taliban, South Waziristan, on Monday. Thousands of children will be vaccinated in the three-day campaign, officials said. As many as 77,216 children aged up to five years would be vaccinated against polio. An awareness-raising workshop – presided over by South Waziristan Political Agent Javed Khan Marwat and attended by Assistant Political Officer Hameedullah Khan and Additional Agency Surgeon Dr Abdullah Khan besides elders of various tribes of South Waziristan – was held to finalise preparations for the campaign. The political agent said solid steps were being taken to eradicate the deadly virus from the agency and they added the cooperation of the local community was necessary in this regard. He said all-out efforts would be made to make the campaign successful as the polio virus inflicted lasting harm on the young lot, who were regarded as builders of the nation.
