Lawyers observe Black Day across Pakistan

Lawyers across the country observed Black Day against the 2007 ouster of chief justice of Pakistan by the then president Pervez Musharraf.
On March 9, 2007, Pervez Musharraf deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry after his refusal to resign.
In all small and large cities, lawyer bodies held protest meetings to mark the day. Lawyers hoisted black flags on bar associations.
On the appeal of Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) and Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), lawyers wore black ribbons and boycotted courts.
Black flags were hoisted at the offices of Lahore High Court and District Bar Associations. The bar associations condemned the dictatorial actions of Pervez Musharraf against the judiciary. The lawyers reiterated their resolve to offer every sacrifice for the independence of judiciary.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, lawyers hoisted black flags and condemned Musharraf’s actions.
In Karachi, Sindh Bar Lawyers boycotted courts at the appeal of Sindh Bar and hoisted blacked flags at the bars room. The lawyers reiterated their resolve to offer every sacrifice for the independence of judiciary.
Balochistan High Court (BHC) and other lower courts’ lawyers hoisted black flags at bar rooms and condemned Musharraf’s actions.
Tens of thousands of litigants on the other hand suffered as they had no knowledge of the strike and came to the courts for their cases. Some of them said that while lawyers strike in support of judiciary was a welcome move but what about the sufferings of the poor people who had come from far off places.
They said they were already tired of prolonged hearing of cases and delay in the judgment, particularly at the subordinate judiciary level.
