The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC), which failed to reduce load shedding hours even during winter, is eyeing a tariff hike by Rs 3 per unit, KESC Share Holders Association General Secretary Choudhary Mazhar Ali said in a statement issued on Friday.
“The KESC has filed a petition with NEPRA for an increase of Rs 3 per unit in its tariff on the basis of the fuel price increase,” he added.
The petition’s hearing will come up before the chairman and members of the authority on March 12 at the NIPA Auditorium, near NIPA Chowrangi.
“Consumers and the general public have been invited through a press notice to present their objections, if any,” said Ali.
“An unsuitable place has been selected for the public hearing that is far from the city’s centre and the commercial and industrial areas. This has been done to minimise the number of interveners,” he added.
Ali said the association had asked the authority to hold the hearing at a place convenient for citizens, but the request was not accepted
“In the present circumstances when excessive load shedding is under way in the city, a further hike in tariff is unjustified. The company is already sending bills to consumers on average basis in violation of NEPRA rules.”
Ali requested citizens including representatives of traders, industrialists and NGOs to attend the NEPRA hearing and lodge their objections.
