Two people suffered bullet wounds in a clash between two groups at the Empress Market on Saturday, police said. The injured identified as Abdul Ruaf, 40, and Muhammad Nawab, 25, were shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi, where doctors stated that their condition was out of danger.
Some reports suggested that both the injured were activists of the Awami National Party (ANP), but the party leadership denied the information.
Talking to Pakistan Today, Sadder Town Superintendent of Police Tariq Dharejo said that two Pakhtun group opened fire at each other over a petty issue.
After the incident, the Empress Market was deserted as unidentified men forced the shopkeepers to close down their businesses and started firing, creating panic among the public.
Fear gripped the area and business activities were shut for more than an hour.
A heavily contingent of police reached the site and brought the situation under control.
When contacted, ANP Information Secretary said that the injured people did not belong to the ANP. “They were Pakhtuns but not our activists,” he added.
