The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has filed four separate applications with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), seeking a per unit increase of Rs 6.50 in the power tariff of distribution companies (DISCOs). The petitions will be heard by the regulator on March 20. The petitions sought an increase of Rs 2.23 per unit for October 2011; Rs 1.29 per unit for November 2011; Rs 0.98 per unit for December 2011; and Rs 1.96 per unit for January 2012, under the monthly Fuel Price Adjustment mechanism.
NEPRA will decide after a public hearing whether the sought increase would be passed on to the consumers at once, or on a cascading basis. NEPRA had deferred the determination of monthly Fuel Price Adjustment after it was challenged in the Lahore High Court, which had granted a stay. The determination process has resumed after the stay was vacated by the court.
