The torturous spell for former England one-day international captain Paul Collingwood as skipper of The New Age Impi in the South African Twenty20 Challenge continued on Sunday after he failed with the bat and ball.
Collingwood was out for eight after facing eight balls and conceded 18 runs in two overs as the Impi lost by 48 runs away to Eastern Cape Warriors and remained rooted to the bottom of the table with eight consecutive defeats.
Warriors made 168-4 off 20 overs at Buffalo Park in Indian Ocean town East London and dismissed the Impi for 120 with 14 balls to spare for a third win within five days.
Colin Ingram led the Warriors batting charge with a 51 that included two fours and three sixes while Australian Ben Edmondson was the only Impi “import” to take a wicket — but it cost 39 runs.
Netherlands World Cup batsman Ryan ten Doeschate top scored for the Impi with 56 off 41 balls but Collingwood and fellow Englishman Luke Wright (5) went cheaply for a team being bankrolled by a Johannesburg newspaper.
Highveld Lions stayed on top of the table thanks to the two points they picked up when a fixture against Coastal Dolphins in Durban was abandoned without a ball being bowled owing to a soaked Kingsmead outfield.
Northern Titans climbed to second spot with a six-wicket victory at Newlands in Cape Town over Western Cape Cobras, whose English batsman Owais Shah hit five fours in a 37 off 41 deliveries.
