The Indian touch

Vendors at Sunday Bazaars cheated customers by mixing Indian onion with local onion and charging high prices. Prices of different vegetables and fruits also increased. Price of Indian onion was high than the local product due to which vendors cheated consumers. Price of Indian onion was Rs 35 per kg while local onion was available for Rs 30. Vendors mixed both qualities and sold it at higher rates. There was a slight difference in qualities of both products but the price difference was Rs 5 per kg. Majority of consumers could not identify this difference and were fleeced easily, consumer Afzal Rana at the Johar Town Sunday Bazaar said, adding that it was the duty of the City District Government Lahore (CDGL) to check vendors. “The CDGL should check this cheating,” he lamented.
According to the market committee report, prices of 15 vegetables out of 27 listed products went up; six decreased and six remained constant. Price of ginger increased by Rs 5 per kg and it was available for Rs 75. Price of potatoes also increased by Rs 3 per kg and it was sold for Rs 15 per kg. Price of onions increased by Rs 7 per kg and it was available for Rs 35 per kg. Garlic also got expensive and was available for Rs 90 per kg. Prices of guava, kinno, oranges and pomegranate also increased. CDGL imposed fine on vendors in Shadman, Wahdat Colony, Allama Iqbal Town and Johar Town Sunday Bazaars for overcharging and recovered Rs 9,500 as fine.
