Nestle on Sunday broke Colony Sugar hegemony at the top and pushed it to number two on the points table of the Bank Alfalah National Polo Championship for the Quaid-e-Azam Gold Cup 2012. On day four of the championship four matches were decided and Nestle downed title favourites Colony Sugar by nine goals to six in the last match of the day, fully enjoyed by the holiday fans and Mrs Bushra Aitzaz, who was the chief guest of the day.
The day started with an easy win for Pakistan Army against BBJ Pipes. Army quartet of Ahmad Nawaz Tiwana, Raja Temur Nadeem, James Harper and James Harper joined hands in a combined effort to leave BBJ Pipes reeling at 11-4. Ahmed Zubair showed some glimpses of fight with little support from Maj Omer Minhas and Gerardo Mazzini.
Guard Group-Newage cut to size Hataff/Diamond Paints in the in the second match hitting 10 goals and conceding five. Hissam Ali Hyder was the star of the win for Guard Group with seven goals while Taimur Ali Malik and Adnan Jalil Azam lend a helping hand by contributing one goal each. From the losing side, Vieri Antinori performed well.
Master Paints left Al Khan/Ciro’s lingering at the near bottom of the points table with a comfortably 9-6 win. The two foreign players – Gaston Moore and Ignacio Del Tour – made the difference by sharing six and three goals of the winners respectively. Manuel Crespo with five goals and Rodrigus Azocar Bravo fought well from the losing side.
In the final match of the day, Nestle were the class of their own in their 9-6 win over Colony Sugar. Everyone on the field and off the field kept their fingers crossed till the fourth chukker during which the teams remained even at five goals each. Colony Sugar started the game in the same manner it won its previous matches but the tide turned in the fourth quarter when Nestle bounced back into the game. By the close of the third quarter Colony Sugar which was leading the match by 4-1 was five-all by the end of the fourth chukker. It was the skillful professionalism of the Hamza Mawaz Khan, Saqib Khan Khakwani, Raja Samiullah and Shah Qubilai Alam that pushed Colony Sugar to number two in the standing. Nestle is now unbeaten and tops the table with 8 points from four matches.
