Condemning the registration of a case against TV anchorperson Hamid Mir and the subsequent issuance of warrants against him, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain has termed the move an attempt to curb the freedom of press. “The MQM condemns this act and demands that the government should withdraw the case against Mir. The harassment must end immediately,” he said in a statement issued on Sunday. Hussain expressed solidarity with the journalist community and said anchorpersons cannot be intimidated by coercive actions of the state. “The independence of the media and press cannot be curbed by such actions,” he added. Hussain noted that the registration of the case against Mir and issuance of warrants are a cause of great concern to the democratic forces in the country. “The government must desist from taking actions that can cause restiveness in the journalist community.”
