No threat to democracy in presence of independent judiciary, says CJP

Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Saturday said there was no threat to democracy in the country in the presence of an independent judiciary and adherence to the constitution would ensure that no other system could prevail.
The chief justice was addressing the roll signing ceremony of newly-enrolled advocates of the Supreme Court hailing from Sindh at the Branch Registry Building, Karachi. The CJ emphasised that the constitution was a live document and by the grace of Allah, the judiciary, parliament and the executive were functioning within their assigned constitutional parameters. Referring to the Senate elections, the chief justice said it too was a demonstration of enforcement of the constitution and such exercise gave satisfaction that “we are going on the right track and in the right direction”. “The elections were a proof of enforcement of the constitution and the country is heading in the right direction,” he added.
He said the object of the bench and the bar was to enforce adherence to the constitution and ensure the supremacy of law in the country without any discrimination. The CJ expressed confidence that after enrolment of the new batch of the Supreme Court lawyers, the newly inducted advocates would provide all possible lawful help to the judiciary for strict adherence to the constitution. He stressed, “If we hold on to a system of rule of law and proceed according to the dictates of the constitution, there should be no danger to the country and the nation will surely progress to achieving economic development and political stability.”

  2. ‘Democracy is for the people, by the people, of the people.’ But ‘Islam is for the people and people are for the Islam.’ this is the difference between Democracy and Islam…that’s why Democracy will always fail but Islam will never fail…Islam is the Pinnacle and the base for the system, this should be the true soul of democracy…then only it will survive…

  3. My admiration for higher judiciary grows all the time. But there is a lot that is wrong with the lower judiciary. My personal cases are pending for over 7 years and no hearing only dates by banking courts. A court order by a civil court is treated as rubbish by Model Town Society. Even the application off contempt of court makes has had no effect.

  5. Sorry gentleman. You really have disappointed to the nation by turning Supreme Court "Anti PPP" when under you , every body in the country, was expecting it be an impartial. Regardless what journalists, to win your sympathy, keep writing and saying on TV channels; truth is you have lost confidence of lots of Pakistanies by solely "targetting" to President Zardari and utterly ignoring to Nawaz Sharif. During hearing of cases remarks from you and your coleagues' about PPP and its leadership had been very insulting and at times seemed full of hatred, which was really hurting.

  8. Is this coming from The CJ? A political statement meant for the members of his constituency; not for the people of Pakistan.He has struck a blow to his credibilty with this "address".

  10. How ? How can 17 oldies in their 60s stop such recurrence if some narcissitic Bonaparte decides to make political power come through the barrel of guns ?
